Airline baggage rules are only part of the picture—electronics, batteries, liquids and everyday travel items can all catch travellers out.

Prepare Before You Leave Home

Lithium batteries power phones, laptops, cameras and power banks, but they also present a fire risk if damaged. Spare batteries and power banks belong in cabin baggage, terminals should be protected, and larger batteries may require airline approval or be prohibited. Electronics are usually best kept in hand baggage. Smart-luggage batteries normally need to be removable. E-cigarettes and vapes belong in cabin baggage. The 100ml liquids rule still applies at many airports unless the departure airport confirms otherwise. Knives, large scissors and heavy tools belong in checked baggage.

Before You Leave Home

Check baggage allowances, measure bags, charge devices, pack power banks in hand luggage and review security rules for medication, baby food or specialist equipment.
